HYDERABAD: Three students, who stole laptops and mobile phones from women's hostels in Madhapur and nearby areas, were arrested on Monday, and stolen property worth Rs 4 lakh was recovered from them.

The trio set fire to two bikes they had stolen, police said.

The arrested - Sai Sampath Sriram of Yousufguda, and Venkat Reddy and Vinod Kumar of Madhapur - are all aged 19 years. Sai is studying first-year engineering at a college at Moinabad while the other two have failed in Intermediate. They took to stealing to lead a lavish lifestyle.

“The trio target working women's hostels and paying guest houses. They sneak into adjacent buildings from where they jump into hostel rooms to avoid being caught by securitymen of hostels,'' Madhapur inspector Lakshmikanth Reddy said. The booty included five laptops, a computer and a bike.

ATTACKED: A man, who returned home from  a late-night movie show, was attacked by a thief for resisting a theft attempt. Gurunath Reddy, who went for the movie along with his friends, returned home at Raghavendra Colony late in the night on Sunday. As he went near his house, he found the main door lock open. Upon entering inside, he found an intruder searching for valuables. To make his escape unhindered, the burglar hit Gurnath Reddy with an iron rod and took to his heels. The injured Reddy was admitted to a hospital. Madhapur police are investigating the case.
