‘India prepared to handle disasters'

There has been a paradigm shift in India compared to 10 years ago, when it had to scramble to deal with natural disasters, Union minister of state for human resources D Purandeshwari said on Thursday.

“We are more prepared to handle disasters now because we have experienced what happens when a disaster strikes,” she said at the inaugural function of a three-day international conference at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI).

She was speaking on ‘Disaster Management: Preparedness, Response and Rehabilitation’. The conference was jointly conducted by Institute of Asian Studies, AV College of Arts, Science & Commerce and Osmania University College for Women.
