Heavy rain lashed Hyderabad on Wednesday slowing down Ganesh immersion and throwing traffic out of gear for hours. Not Just the State capital, light to heavy showers battered Telangana as well as Coastal and Rayalaseema regions.
According to the Met department, 40 mm rainfall was recorded in Hyderabad. Coastal Andhra and Telangana received rainfall of up to 12 cms, said a release from the Chief Minister’s Office. In Telangana, Medak distict received the highest rainfall of 12 cm, while Adilabad, Rangareddy, Nalgonda and Nizamabad recorded 6-9 cm of rainfall.
Compared to Telangana, Coastal Andhra received less amount of rainfall, with the highest of 4 cm recorded in Visakhapatnam district. Rayalaseema received considerably higher rainfall with Chittoor district recording 8 cm.Hyderabad, which received showers in brief spells earlier in the day, was hit hard by heavy rain later in the evening.
It was almost like a deluge in several areas like Khairatabad, Somajiguda, CM’s camp office, Panjagutta, Begumpet, RTC X roads, Rail Nilayam and Tarnaka. With water reaching up to knee-level on the roads, traffic came to an almost standstill. The traffic diversions, which blocked all the roads leading to the Tankbund, and Ganesh processions progressing at a snail’s pace, made life worse for commuters.
