Theatre revivalist Mohammad Ali Baig was felicitated for his work in theatre revival at the historic Salar Jung Museum on Tuesday. He drew tremendous appreciation from other well known theatre veterans in the city. “What Baig has done for Hyderabad’s theatre could not be achieved by anyone else. He made Hyderabad’s theatre global”, said Prof Bhaskar Shewalkar of Rangadhara.

Fellow theatre veteran, Mala Pasha of Torn Curtains, commented, “Baig’s revival movement is an inspiration to young theatre artists.” Prof Alok Pandey of Hyderabad Central University added, “The only other person I can think of who raised theatre to such great heights in such grand style is Prithviraj Kapoor.” Meanwhile, British High Commissioner Andre McAllister called the thespian to “Hyderabad’s Kohinoor”.

Baig has created a special niche in the world of theatre and has been an inspiration to everybody. “Baig has his own brand of theatre, glamour on stage that touches people’s hearts. His discipline percolates in all actors who work with him,” commented actress Madhu who was also present at the felicitation.

Begum Razia Baig, Mariam Azmi, Asad Pasha and other well known theatre artists were also present.
