Violence returned to Osmania University campus after students hurled stones at policemen who tried to prevent them from taking out a rally to Raj Bhavan on Monday.
Two policemen were injured in the stone pelting while the police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the mob. The students took out a bike rally from Arts college to Raj Bhavan demanding that the Telangana Bill, without any conditions, be passed immediately.
Around 12.30 p.m, around 40 students took out a bike rally. As students reached the NCC gate, police detained them stating that restrictions were in place in the city and therefore, they would not be allowed to take out a rally. Police also blocked the Osmania University road by setting up barricades on the stretch at NCC gate.
As the police denied permission to students to take out a rally, several students sat in front of barricades and started raising slogans demanding passing of Telangana Bill unconditionally. Suddenly, some students tried to barge the police cordon by removing the barricades.
The police forces deployed in and around the campus to prevent untoward incidents lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the mob. In retaliation, the mob started lobbing stones on police forces.
Panic gripped the passersby as students kept hurling stones at policemen who retaliated with tear gas shells. Tension prevailed in and around the campus for about two hours.
Kachiguda division ACP J Ranjan Rathan Kumar said two constables received mild injures in the stone pelting.
Students’ JAC president Kailash Netha alleged the police deliberately detained the students who were taking out bike rally from the OU campus peacefully.
Even though the police detained them, they would intensify their stir and demanded that the government should pass the Telangana Bill without any conditions, he said.
Earlier, the police took as many as 20 students into custody who were proceeding towards Raj Bhavan.
