HYDERABAD: The shocking incident of a woman executive raped by an Uber Cab driver in New Delhi has come as an eye-opener for women commuters in Hyderabad, who will now think twice before hiring the cabs.

The fact that the arrested driver, Shiv Kumar Yadav, was a repeat offender has exposed the chinks in the cab service company as it failed to conduct background checks. “It is disturbing to think that drivers are appointed without any background check. Another scary part of travelling in cabs like Uber is that there is no communication with anybody except the driver. In Meru and Dot Cabs, we can contact the customer care and speak to someone, which is reassuring. But here, everything is done through smartphone apps and there is no guarantee if someone is actually monitoring the drivers,” says Mythili Pragada, an architect.

However, cab companies say they do everything possible to ensure reliable and responsible drivers are behind the wheel. “We make sure to personally interview each driver before hiring them.

We also take into account if the driver has any responsibilities in life because usually those who are aimless and have no responsibilities commit such crimes,” Syed Shafi, who runs a cab service in the city, says
