In the Name of Nirbhaya

HYDERABAD: Remembering the Nirbhaya incident which shook the entire nation two years ago on December 16, the Progressive Organisation of Women (POW), announced to observe this day as the ‘Day of Sexual violence against women’. Several rallies have been organised by the POW in the city to raise the voice against increasing rape and sexual violence cases against women in India. The POW claimed that a call has been given to all of its members to organise similar activities in different parts of the state. On Tuesday, the members of POW along with the students of Government Junior College, Hayathnagar took out a rally in the memory of Nirbhaya. Addressing the students at the event, G Jhansi, President of POW said, “Even after constituting the Nirbhaya act, there is no change. There are incidents of sexual violence against women everyday. We must intensify our fight to stop this.” The government must do something to assure safety of women in the country, she added. Besides, the POW also organised candle light rallies for the same cause at several parts of the city including Sheikpet, ECIL, Parsigutta in the evening. Jhansi said, the coordination committee of the POW carried out the similar activities in several states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab as well.
