To promote tourism and augment footfall at the Bhavani Island in Vijayawada, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) has proposed a passenger ropeway from the base of river front to the island.
It will be developed on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBOT) basis. The Youth Advancement, Tourism and Culture (PMU) Department is the facilitator of bidding process and invited request for proposal from the agencies up to February 25 for developing the ropeway. A pre-bid meeting will be held on Monday at the Tourism House in Hyderabad for clarifying doubts.
Presently boats are the only means of conveyance to the island. About 200-300 tourists visit Bhavani Island everyday and on holidays and weekends the number varies from 600 to 800 and it is much more during October-November months.
The length of the ropeway is about 630 mtrs and the estimated cost of the project would be around Rs 12.20 crore. The developer have to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the project and transfer back the project site at the end of the concession period.
Tourism department officials told Express that the ropeway was proposed as Bhavani Island is one of the most favoured travel attractions in Vijayawada. The beautiful island stretches itself in the Krishna river, four km upstream from the city. Perhaps the largest river island spread across an area of around 133 acres.
The island has become a popular picnic spot for tourists and people of Vijayawada. As per a study, once the ropeway is launched it will be used by about 2.24 lakh persons.
The 630 metre-long ropeway will be built from Lower Terminal Point (LTP) ie Berum Park (Krishna river front) to Upper Terminal Point (UTP)- Bhavani Island. It is proposed to opt for a bi-cable system to avoid the task of raising a pillar in the middle of the river for a mono-cable system. The project will be given on lease for development for a span of 20 years and a construction period of 24 months, including all sorts of permissions, will be given to the developers.
The ropeway will have two cabins with a capacity 12 passengers each with a journey time of three minutes. The ticket rates for round the trip would be Rs 100 for adults and Rs 50 for children.
