Aruna Roy to Receive Honours

University of Hyderabad (UoH) will be awarding a Honorary Doctorate to social activist Aruna Roy on January 9 at the university premises. Roy will later deliver a distinguished lecture titled ‘Democratic Governance - A contemporary Discourse’.

Aruna Roy, born in Chennai on 26 June, 1946, joined the Indian Administrative Services as a civil servant in 1968 and quit it in 1974 to join The Social Work and Research Centre (SWRC), Tilonia, Rajasthan. She devoted her time to social and political campaigns. She found Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathana (MKSS) which works with workers and peasants in the villages of Central Rajasthan. She is known as a prominent leader of the Right to Information movement.

In 2000, she was awarded the Ramon Magasay Award for Community Leadership and received the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration, Academia and Management in 2010.
