Two persons were injured in a clash between the supporters of Bhongir MP Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy and Suryapeta MLA R Damodar Reddy during a Congress meeting here on Monday. The meeting was convened by AICC Observer Wagre to zero in on potential candidates for the forthcoming elections.
Trouble started when Rajagopal Reddy objected to the reported moves of Damodar Reddy to field his son Sarvottam Reddy as a candidate for the Bhongir LS seat.
Questioning the credentials of Sarvottam Reddy to be fielded for the post, the MP asked the MLA why he was trying to generate tension in the Bhongir Parliamentary constituency instead of confining himself to the Suryapeta Assembly constituency.
Angered at this, Damodar Reddy accused Rajagopal Reddy of indulging in murderous politics and being involved in land-grabbing and other illegal activities.
After these verbal exchanges, the supporters of Damodar Reddy rained stones and footwear on the supporters of Rajagopal Reddy resulting in injuries to two of them. The latter too retaliated in the same manner. The windowpane of the MP’s car was also damaged in the incident. Meanwhile, alerted about the clashes, the police rushed to the spot and resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the AICC observer completed his work and left the venue escorted by DCC president T Devendar Reddy and Alair MLA B Bikshamaiah Gowd.
Later, Rajgopal Reddy, accompanied by Nakrekal MLA Chirumarthy Lingaiah and others, staged a dharna and ‘rasta roko’ in front of Bhongir police station demanding registration of a case against Damodar Reddy and Bhongiri congress leader Chinthala Venkateshwar Reddy for attacking his supporters. Traffic was stalled for a while on the Hyderabad- Warangal road due the ‘rasta roko’, which was called off after police agreed to file cases against Damodar Reddy and Venkateshwar Reddy. Damodar Reddy’s supporters also lodged a complaint against Rajagopal Reddy and his supporters.
Earlier, Rajgopal Reddy, Damodar Reddy, Sarvottam Reddy, Bikshamaiah Gowd, MLC N Vidyasagar, Venkateshwar Reddy and some supporters of Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah met Wagrey to present their views of the prospective candidates for the LS and Assembly constituencies.
