City Likely to Get Jurala Water

The water to city can be tapped from Ramanpad Balancing Reservoir as it is directly connected to Jurala reservoir with the main canal

HYDERABAD: With drinking water needs of Greater Hyderabad increasing with each passing day, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) as a long term measure has proposed to draw water from a new water supply augmentation source from Priyadarshini Jurala Project in Mahabubnagar district.

Presently, drinking water to the twin cities is coming from water sources like Akkampally (Krishna), Singur and Manjira reservoirs which are 100 km away from the city. Presently the drawl of water from Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs are negligible as they are on the verge of drying up.

The phase-I of Godavari drinking water supply scheme is under progress to bring 172 MGD from Yellampally Barrage (200 km away from city) and another 90 MGD of water through Krishna Phase III from Akkampally by this year-end.

As against the present demand of 490 MGD, the available water from existing projects is about 271 MGD and the deficit is about 219 MGD. The proposed Phase-III of KDWSP and Phase-I of GDWSP if completed would reduce the deficit but in the long term a new scheme has to be commenced to cater to the demands of ever increasing water demand and upcoming Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) project in Hyderabad.

Senior officials of the water board told Express that technically, it is feasible to formulate a source augmentation scheme to draw 5.5 TMC (90 Million Gallons of water per day) as Phase-I of Jurala project for drinking water supply of Greater Hyderabad city. The same was informed to chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao during a meeting recently.

They said that the storage capacity of Jurala reservoir is 11.94 TMC and with full reservoir level is about 318.52 metres, It is about 123 km away from the city. The water to city can be tapped from Ramanpad Balancing Reservoir as it was directly connected to Jurala reservoir with main canal. The storage capacity of Jurala reservoir can be considered for the live storage of Ramanpad Balancing Reservoir.

The proposed Priyadarshini Jurala Project can be taken up in four packages, ie, from Ramanpahad to Moosapet (35 km, package-1), Moosapet to Jadcherla (27 km, package-II), Jadcherla to Shadnagar (34 km, package-III) and from Shadnagar to Outer Ring Road Junction at International Airport (27 km, package-IV).

Two ring mains have been proposed, Ring Main-1 at ORR junction at airport to Lingampally and linking with Manjira system (30 km) and Ring Main-2 from ORR junction at airport to Uppal ORR to the existing trunk mains to connect to Sainikpuri MBR and linking to Krishna system (60 km).
