Now, GHMC Moots ‘Breakfast for Rs 1’

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will unveil another innovative scheme of morning breakfast for Rs 1 for poor and needy people in the city, mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain said.

The corporation, which had launched Rs 5 food scheme at eight centres in the city a few months ago, will open more subsidised food centres by October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, he said after inaugurating the ninth centre of Rs 5 food scheme at Liberty Crossroads on Saturday.

Every rupee collected as tax was being spent to help the citizens in many ways, he claimed. After setting up 50 subsidised food centres, the corporation would launch the `1 breakfast scheme, for which proposals are being prepared.

Commissioner Somesh Kumar said that many  drivers, cleaners, sweepers and others  wanted a food centre set up near the GHMC head office. “Though the corporation can provide free meals, poor people must get food with dignity. Hence the charge of Rs 5 per meal,” he explained.
