Hyderabad Cough Syrup for Alcoholics in Bangladesh

HYDERABAD: Are wholesale drug dealers in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh involved in routing cough syrups to Bangladesh illegally?

A consignment of more than a lakh cough syrup bottles bearing batch numbers belonging to the sibling states were seized at the porous India-Bangladesh border two months ago and the ongoing investigation into the case points to the role of some wholesalers.

It is learnt that about 30 wholesale drug dealers in both the states were identified for selling the syrup bottles seized at the border, and investigation is on to know their role.

It is reported widely about addiction to cough syrup and how it is used as an alternative to alcohol by addicts.

In November, the Drug Control Administration (DCA) officials here got a call from Director general of DCA, Kolkata, informing about the seizure. Among the seized syrup bottles, around 80,000 of them were traced as bottles sold by six wholesale drug dealers in AP. And only in one part of Hyderabad, a 20,000 syrup bottles were sold by a drug dealer, said the officials.
