Hidden in Corners

Sofia Shaik is a 27-year-old who, though moved to the United States, is currently in the city for the festival.

She tells us, that after 15 to 16 hours of fasting in a given day, “the body wants something to cool down.”

Favourite food items:

That is why she prefers to have dahi vada everyday. “Dahi vada is my favourite because it soothes my angry stomach. Curd is also healthy otherwise,” she explains.

Apart from this, she also likes to sip on Arabian Gahwa, “It is a sweet syrup that tastes like coffee. It is nothing like our local coffee though. It is white in colour and very sweet. A dash of cardamom is what does wonders when you have it after a long day’s fast.It is served in small clay pots and is really tasty!” she exclaims.

It is only available in Ramzan in the city.

Favourite spots:

For dahi vada Sofia says, “there are a number of small places all around Toli Chowki that open just after sunset.”

The Arabian Gahwa is available along side Shah Ghouse restaurant in Charminar.

“They are sold by roadside vendors and taste just heavenly,” she adds.
