Taking that Extra Step

Meet these dynamic women from the city who prove that learning has no age limit

We all start school at the age of three mostly because that is the norm in the country. We complete our graduation so that we can get the most lucrative job in the market – that pays us enough to make ends meet.

But here are some unconventional women from the city, who got back to learning new things just to live their passion.

“There is a thin line between living and existing,” says Jyoti Singh, a senior manager at Apollo Life.

Having led a challenging life till date, Jyoti recently took up the task of learning to drive. “I wanted to do something that is out of my comfort zone and also stop depending on my driver every time. I feel, being able to drive will also help me move out as and when I like and also save some time,” says the 50-year-old.

The lady who loves challenges had also completed a Post Graduation Diploma in General Management from Xavier Labor Relations Institute, Jamshedpur, at the age of 47. It does not stop at that. She plans to study jewellery designing in future.

Kavita D, who now successfully runs a boutique had to give up her studies as her parents wanted to get her married. “I had a passion for studying but I could not due to lack of family support. But after my children grew up, I decided to do something that will create an identity,” says Kavita who took up a sewing course, something that she has been familiar with since childhood.

“My mother had taught me basics of sewing and I really love the way we could make a dress look unique with only a needle and a thread. After I completed my course, I started a small boutique at home. But recently I moved out to start an outlet which has got me a lot of visibility,” she informs.

Though she could not take the risk of expanding it further, Kavita is happy that she did not remain in her comfort zone and explored till the best of her ability.

Leading a similar life is Padma Kosoor who pursued Post Graduation Diploma in Early Childhood Education when she was sure that her children were ready to take care of themselves.

“As I wanted to start my career as a teacher, I took up the course when my elder daughter was in Class X. I felt good to get back to studies after 18 years,” beams Padma adding, “As I had started studying again, I also decided to complete my Post Graduation in English Literature. Though it did not help me in my career, it helped me fulfill my dream,” says Padma.

So if you are hesitant to take up that art class or a course you always wanted to do, now is the time.
