Salman Gets the 'Kick'

As it is in every high profile case, the verdict in Salman Khan’s case, where the sessions court found him guilty in the hit-and-run incident, has resulted in breathless coverage and conduct certificates
Salman Gets the 'Kick'

While Salman’s conviction broke  many hearts and fans came out in support, a section of people also believe the verdict – read justice – was delayed by 13 years. Further, with the actor getting an interim bail till Friday, several people feel he will not spend much time behind the bars.

City-based entrepreneur Komal Goel says it is testing time for the fans of Chulbul Pandey. “Fan or not, anyone who sympathises with Salman doesn’t know a thing about justice,” she says.

Others while hailing the conviction, rued that it took way too much time. “It was a drunk and drive case in which conviction shouldn’t take so long. The actor also tried to manipulate the evidences and influence witnesses to evade punishment. Considering all this, a jail term of five years is absolutely justified,” says Manikanta Sai, an engineering student.

Another student Aneesha Jaiswal, says punishing a celebrity or those in position of power sets a good precedent. “Apart from telling people that no one is above law, the judgement also sets an example on the ills of drunken driving and may discourage his admirers from indulging in such an activity,” she asserts.

IT professional, Ilyas Syed, is of the opinion that Salman’s case will be a repetition of what happened with Sanjay Dutt. “The judgement hasn’t benefited the victims. One should not make the mistake of rejoicing his conviction in haste. He already has procured an interim relief. He will appeal in higher courts. And even if he does go to the jail, he will get VIP treatment, come out on parole, shoot movies, earn big money and go back to jail again just like Sanjay Dutt,” he says.

And then there are die-hard fans who feel the Dabangg actor’s work with his NGO Being Human is proof enough to give him a second chance. “Salman not only has a mass following, he has also touched millions of needy lives in a meaningful and positive way. It would do more good to the needy people of India especially children by pardoning him than punishing him. The good work that he has done so far supercedes the lone case of the hit and run and we need to see him as a human being and not a murderer,” says Mishaal Sarawgi, a corporate employee.
