HYDERABAD: Known for bringing fitness levels of the Indian cricket team up to scratch during his stint as the team’s official physiotherapist from 2005 until 2008, the strapping John Gloster is a walking manual on all things fitness related. Currently the physiotherapist of Rajasthan Royals, who’ve had a successful outing this season, the Australian goes beyond the regular ‘cardio and diet’ mantra, to give us an insight into what it really means to be fighting fit.
Your take on mind training
You cannot train your body without training your mind and you can’t train your mind without also getting into shape. The harder you train the body, the stronger your mind becomes.
How does one deal with the heat?
I think the best way to do it is spend more time in the environment, rather than shy away from it. I also encourage the team to keep themselves hydrated, and that applies to others as well. Also when you are dehydrated, the chances of fatigue and injury are very high.
Fitness apps you swear by
The Step-o-meter (for Android) is something I use a lot. It counts the steps you’ve taken, steps per minute, kilometres per hour and calories burned. Another great app is A-Z Food Nutrition Facts (for iOS) which gives you information like calories, carbohydrate count, protein and fat content for about 1,000 different foods.
On dealing with stress
First of all, to state the obvious, it’s very important to tackle the source of your stress. Secondly, check if you’re getting enough sleep, evaluate your diet. On the advice of your doctor, a few good supplements you can take are Vitamin D3 and B12.
The concept of shocking the body
I’m not a big fan of it because I strongly believe in a graded program where your body can slowly adapt to a new regime. I also find that pushing your body to its limits all of a sudden leads to a lot of injuries.
Dealing with injury
You need to really understand what the injury is and be intimate with the causes and effects of it. For people who are getting back into fitness after a layoff, it’s best to simulate the scenario in a controlled environment before actually signing up for the real deal.
Hottest fitness regimes that are effective
I think pilates is something that’s really good for you, so is altitude training, where you are put into a simulated high altitude environment while training. Aqua aerobics is also very effective and this is something the team does together as a group fitness activity. It’s the safest form of resistance training and is also relaxing at the same time.
