First Hyd Water Sports Regatta at Hussainsagar

The event, to be held from June 4 to 6, will be part of TS Formation Day celebrations

HYDERABAD:The First Hyderabad Water Sports Regatta will be held from June 4 to 6 at the Hussainsagar as part of the Telangana Formation Day celebrations.

The Regatta, which will from now on be held annually, will be hosted by The Yacht Club of Hyderabad and the Telangana Sailing Association in collaboration with the Telangana Tourism department.

Hussainsagar has been hosting sports like sailing for almost a century and more recently, rowing, kayaking and canoeing too.

The jewel of Hyderabad city, Hussainsagar has also hosted a multitude of regattas thanks to the Secunderabad Sailing Club, the EME and the Yacht Club of Hyderabad.

The newly-formed State, which is committed to cleaning and beautification of the lake, has decided to include it in the list of places to be celebrated with the announcement of the First Hyderabad Water Sports Regatta.

In association with the Telangana Sailing Association, the government will host the regatta that will include Kayaking, Sailing, Rowing and Canoeing.

All the clubs and associations situated around the lake have been invited and a special relay in recreational Kayaks will be conducted in collaboration with the Greater Hyderabad Adventure Club, which is open to all citizens.

“Normally the regattas that are conducted are sport-specific like Optimist or Laser or Hobie and it is therefore unique that a Regatta at Hussainsagar will include so many disciplines,” said Suheim Sheikh, president of the Yacht Club.

“We are proud to be part of the First Hyderabad Water Sports Regatta as the dream of a clean Hussainsagar is finally beginning to unfold under the aegis of the government that is deeply committed to sports, tourism and environment” Principal Secretary (tourism & sports) BP Acharya said.

IT and Panchayat Raj Minister KT Rama Rao will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Many prominent officials are also expected to participate in the event.
