In a First, Woman Jailed for 3 Days for Drunken-driving

Though city police are conducting regular checks, people continue to drink and drive

HYDERABAD: For the first time, a woman has been jailed for driving in an inebriated condition in the city. The third metropolitan magistrate of the traffic mobile unit convicted her and sent her to jail for three days after she was caught driving her car under the influence of alcohol under the Asifnagar traffic police limits last week. Her BAC level stood at 88 mg/100 ml in the breath analyser test.

Meanwhile, the third and fourth metropolitan magistrate courts, Erramanzil, also awarded imprisonment and slapped fines of up to Rs 2,000 on 27 others who were caught for the same offence. according to police, while two were jailed for a month, four for imprisoned for 20 days, 11 for 10 days, eight for five days and two others for two days.

In Cyberabad, the traffic police registered traffic violation cases numbering 293 against vehicle riders on the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Out of these, 70 were for wrong parking, 223 for driving on the wrong side/ entering from the wrong side/dangerous driving/lane violation. The total fine amount collected was Rs 2,39,250.

A toal of 198 cases were booked during the special drive. The fine amount collected was Rs 3,54,500.

Tipsy doc gives police the slip

Hyderabad: A woman doctor here ran into trouble on Friday night after she was stopped at a police checkup for drunken drivers. She not only refused to cooperate with the breath analyser test but also argued with the police for half an hour. The 30-year-old, following the test, was found to have consumed alcohol. Meanwhile, her friends arrived and helped her flee from the spot. According to police, the accused, Manju, was driving a white Hyundai I10 car. While the police, including women police constables, asked her to undergo the test, she blatantly refused and in turn started arguing with them.  In a video recording that was repeatedly telecast on the electronic media, Manju could be seen wearing jeans and dark-coloured top. “The incident happened around 10:40 pm, at Heart Cup Coffee junction on Road Number 45, Jubilee Hills. She was alone in the car. The breath analyser test showed that she had 32 mg of alcohol in her blood. Police have seized her car and registered a case against her,” said Rajendra Kulkarni, Traffic Inspector, Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar. According to him, she is a resident of Madhapur. The police said they are going to track her down and will produce her in the court on Monday.
