Transport Company Asked to Pay Rs 6.80 Lakh for Damage to Car

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad III District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum here has directed a private cargo transport company to pay Rs6,29,338 as repair cost and Rs50,000 as compensation for the damage caused to a four-wheeler during its transporting from New Delhi to Hyderabad.

V Naga Bhanu availed the services of Vishal Movers and Packers for the purpose of transporting her  four-wheeler, Mitsubishi Cedia Sports, from Hyderabad to Delhi in the last week of June 2013. On coming to know that vehicles purchased before 2010 could not be registered in Delhi, she decided to move her car back to Hyderabad and availed the services of the transport company on March 7, 2014.

Bhanu claimed that the vehicle, which was supposed to be delivered in about 8 to 10 days, was delivered after more than 30 days. She alleged that the company used her vehicle by running it for more than 600 km, and also failed to inform her about the damages caused to her car when it was in their custody. She filed a police complaint on June 5, 2014 against the transporter. Alleging that there was deficiency in service provided by them, she approached the consumer forum for repair costs and compensation.

Vishal Movers and Packers were served a notice of appearance but they failed to appear before the forum for hearing. The forum then gave an ex parte ruling.

The forum, comprising its president Y Chandrasekhara Reddy and members D.Mahesh Kumar and C.Nirmala, passed an order in favour of Naga Bhanu. They directed the transport company to pay a sum of Rs6,29,338 towards damages caused to the vehicle, a sum of Rs50,000 towards compensation and  Rs 3,000 towards litigation costs.
