'I Am a Humanist'

Actress Mahie Gill rose to fame with Dev D made a mark with Dabangg, Paan Singh Tomar and the Saheb Biwi Aur Gangsters series. She talks about her strengths as a woman and what she thinks of her contemporaries

Strengths as a woman?

My strengths would be the ability to emerge stronger every time I am broken.

Do you think as a woman you have certain advantages over men?

I don’t think there are any advantages and there shouldn’t be either. Men and women should both co-exist.

Are you a feminist?

I wouldn’t say that I am a feminist, I would say that I am a humanist.

Do you like to celebrate the female gender? If yes, then how?

Being a woman for me is great. Every time I get together with my friends, it’s a celebration. Most of my friends are female and we have fun hanging out with each other.

Who is an ideal man according to you?

A man who is well settled, has strong family values, respects you and your work.

Do you think a woman necessarily needs a man to complete her?

I feel a woman can be complete by herself but having a good man by her side can truly elevate her.

How do you deal with men who ogle at you?

I look mysterious and unapproachable.

Did you always want to be an actress?

Yes. I have done my Masters in Theatre. My parents wanted me to do a PhD and become a lecturer. Instead, I did television and three films in Punjab. Later, I moved to Mumbai and Dev D happened.

Your idols

My mother is my idol. She has always been steadfast in her love for her children. Also, Lady Diana because I found her so pretty and charming.
