HYDERABAD: The PhD admission process in headless state universities of Telangana presents a pathetic picture. Despite the availability of guides (faculty members) and seats, none of the universities has enrolled a single student for their PhD courses this year.

Nearly four months after the commencement of the new academic year, no state university has even initiated the admission process. Though shortage of regular faculty was frequently cited as reason for this, absence of regular vice-chancellors and lack of effective monitoring system have become major obstacles for institutes to take major academic decisions.

Zero.JPGOsmania University, the biggest of the state universities, took more than a year even to conduct the entrance test after issuing the notification for State Eligibility Test (SET). After a considerable delay, the results were announced in June. But the entire process has been stalled ever since owing to the cut-off marks row. A proposal to reduce the minimum qualifying marks in SET is pending with the state government.

Kakatiya University (KU), Warangal, another major university, is planning to issue a notification for entrance test after a gap of two years while Telangana University (TU) also is thinking on similar lines.

The Potti Sriramulu Telugu University finally conducted its entrance test a month ago but is yet to declare the results. Telugu University registrar K Thomasaiah said, “The results of PG entrance test will be announced in a couple of days. PhD admissions will begin after that.”

Mahatma Gandhi University of Nalgonda district does not offer any PhD course. As far as PhD admissions are concerned, all state universities are in the same boat but very few of them are about to begin the process shortly. The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad

(JNTU-H), which issued entrance test notification four months ago, is planning to conduct the test in a month, according to university registrar N Yadaiah.

The Satavahana University, Karimnagar seems to have forged a little ahead of other universities and is set to conduct interviews for PhD admissions. Said registrar M Komal Reddy, “This year no entrance test has been held. Admissions will be given to the CSR and NET fellowship holders, based on their performance in the interviews.”
