He may not have chosen the obvious path, the one both his parents tread on. But he made a significant mark in the country’s most-loved sport – cricket.
He always wanted to be a doctor and on Sunday, he was more than happy when he was conferred a doctorate by Gitam University. This is his second one. Earlier, in February this year, he received the same from TERI University, New Delhi.
Laxman thus joined an elite list of cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni to be honoured with a doctorate by different universities.
“I was all the more happy that I was conferred with this doctorate honour in front of my parents. I initially thought of pursuing medicine but I always had a special liking for cricket. I am lucky that my parents gave me the freedom to become a cricketer. Today, because of cricket, I have been conferred with this doctorate certificate,’’ said the excited 40-year-old.
