SUV Rams Railing, Goes Up in Flames

HYDERABAD:  An SUV burst into flames after hitting the railings near Rajendranagar in the city on Saturday. Udaya Laxmi, 29, who was behind the wheels, had a close shave after she lost control over the wheel and rammed into the railings. The vehicle turned turtle and  went up in flames minutes after she got out.

The incident took place at around 1.30 pm when the woman was proceeding towards Shamshabad from Madhapur via Gachibowli in her Mercedez Benz SUV. “The car took exit number 17 on the road at a high speed and hit the railings. The driver seems to have lost control and the car also turned turtle after which it hit the railings and stopped,” said Ramachandraiah, SI of Rajendranagar police station. According to him, workers on the ORR stretch and passersby helped her get out of the car after which the SUV went up in flames. “The accident was caused by sheer negligence. The woman in the car was a student and was alone at the time of accident. She is unhurt,” added the SI.

Though one would link such incidents to overheating due to the prevailing heat, car mechanics beg to differ. “It could happen due to the heavy collision which could have damaged the fuel pipe or due to a spark triggered by collision,” said Rakesh Bhole, a car mechanic.
