HYDERABAD: While a section of students are overjoyed that Shahrukh Khan is visting their University, some students of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) are planning to boycott the convocation to be held on Monday.

Arisha Tasmeen who is pursuing her PhD in Urdu asked what girl wouldn’t be excited to meet the star. “I have heard that only the gold medalist will get a chance to be get a picture with him,” she said. However, some students on campus have decided to boycott the convocation alleging negligence. According to MANUU Students’ Union (MSU) members, the varsity administration has ignored a section of students residing on campus by not inviting them in the convocation. MANUU Students’ Union members said, “The idea behind this boycott is to protest the varsity authorities’ attitude to sideline its students from being the stakeholders of MANUU... The authorities have even asked many of us uninvited ones to stay outside the campus while the programme is being held.

We also oppose the fact that a programme meant for students has become about  promoting VIP culture and elitism.” They added that they opposed the waste of resources. “Many trees on campus were cut down to provide for security arrangements. A lot of expenditure which should have gone in building hostels has unnecessarily gone into preparations for the programme. Hence, we disassociate ourselves from this lavish and pompous programme,” said the protesting students.
