HYDERABAD: Members of Telangana Doctors Forum said that failure in system and lack of protocol is the reason for attacks on doctors. They said a proper mechanism has to be established and rules should be followed by staff. Members of the forum demanded the appointment of an independent ombudsman for each hospital to receive and redress complaints.

“The protocol starts from the time a patient enters the hospital. After clearing security, there should be an inquiry counter where a patient is directed to the ward concerned. There after, a helpline should be there which takes details and takes patient to the doctor concerned. Right now there is no such facility where it is decided if a patients has to go to Emergency ward or only needs first aid,” said  B Pratap Reddy, vice chairman of Telangana Doctors Forum at a press conference held here in the city, on the subject ‘Attack on woman doctor at Osmania General Hospital.’

Members of the forum stated that often the assumption that doctors are negligent is not a fact as attendants don’t understand the difference between negligence on part of an individual and inadequate staff, equipment or medicines. They said that patients or attendants get agitated, if there is no proper response.

“Government should also consider paying insurance companies for professional indemnity against negligence by staff or institutional failures. This helps aggrieved parties to be compensated for any proven negligence,” chairman of the forum Dr A Gopal Kishan, other members of the forum and Junior Doctors Association (JUDA) stated. On the occasion, delay in construction of new building for Osmania General Hospital and lack of enough employees was also pointed out.
