HYDERABAD: The High Court on Monday issued notices to Telangana Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee chairman and former High Court judge P Swaroop Reddy, state special chief secretary (higher education) Ranjeev R Acharya and several others in a contempt case filed by the managements of two engineering colleges.

Justice MS Ramachandra Rao was dealing with the petitions of Vasavi and Sree educational institutions which submitted that they were aggrieved because the committee had fixed the fees in such a way that it became unviable for it to run the courses. They wanted higher fee to be fixed.

Counsels appearing for the colleges said committee’s mandate was to see that private professional colleges don’t indulge in profiteering. But in the instant case, the committee fixed the fee in a manner that was detrimental to interests of professionally-run colleges.

After perusing the record, the judge issued notices to all the respondents, including JNTU V-C Venugopal Reddy, chairman of council for higher education Papi Reddy and others, asking them to file counter affidavits within 10 days, and adjourned the hearing.
