Video of minors from NGO-run hostel forced to clean drain lands officials in soup

An orphanage in Hyderabad’s Uppal landed into soup after forcing children to clean the drainage.

HYDERABAD: Two women officials of an NGO-run hostel for HIV positive patients were arrested on Saturday after police got a video showing five minor inmates being forced to clean a drainage tank in the premises in Uppal area, here.

The video, submitted to police by Achyuta Rao, a child rights activist, purportedly showed some girls cleaning a drainage tank at the hostel run by NGO Ambassadors of Goodwill for AIDS Patients Everywhere' (AGAPE).

Hostel warden V Prajavathi and supervisor G Elavarasan were released on bail after they were produced in court on Sunday, said inspector Narasimha Reddy.

A senior police official, however, said that inmates of the hostel had made no complaints against the two women, and in fact vouched for the facilities provided to them.

A case under section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act (subjecting children to cruelty) has been registered against them.
