KOCHI: Innovations in electronics and communications have helped the development of the country. India’s space programme has not only helped in advancing space technology but also supported advancement in telephones, fibre optics, mobile technology, search and rescue as well as networking of India’s remotest regions, said K Radhkrishnan, Director Vikram Sarabhai Science Centre, ISRO.
He was delivering the inaugural address of the two-day seminar on ‘Innovations in electronics technology for futuristic communications’ being organised by the Institutions of Engineers, Kochi, on Friday. He said that INSAT has networked about 34,000 classrooms across the country, the Village Resource centres have connected 450 villages with the help of NGOs. Technology has helped in ‘Search and Rescue’ in which 1,750 lives were saved in 65 incidents.
Radhakrishnan said that disaster management has become much easier as fast and effective communication and early warning systems have been activated through virtual private network which connects the Union Home Ministry with the state headquarters and district centres.
Speaking on the occasion M P Sukumaran Nair, Special secretary to Chief Minister said that such seminars could help new entrants to think out of the box and develop research aptitudes.
Earlier, G Viswanathan, chairman, IEI Kochi local centre welcomed the gathering.
The two-day seminar attempts to update, discuss and analyse innovative work in electronics with special emphasis on communication technologies.
It has four sessions covering a number of technical areas like infrastructure development for future IT, e-commerce and e-governance, IT-enabled services, space communication, tele-medicine, advances in digital signal processing etc.
There shall be four invited lectures by eminent speakers and a total of 17 technical papers shall be presented during the seminar.
