KOCHI: In an attempt to maintain integrity in the functioning of the state police, the top brass of the state police have decided to launch a thorough probe into the 'alleged network' of certain officials, who have been misusing their official power for personal interests.
The decision followed the recent incident in Kochi where a Madurai city Crime Branch police team, with the active support of a state Crime Branch official, reportedly tried to take away the accused in a cheque case, who had filed a complaint against Crime Branch DIG S Sreejith. The senior police officials in the state have taken the issue seriously and have ordered a thorough probe into the incident, to be conducted by the Kochi City Police Commissioner.
The police higherups suspect it to be the handiwork of a group of police officials in the state with the connivance of an official attached to Madurai City Crime Branch.
"The incident has brought to light the unholy nexus between certain officials of the Tamil Nadu police and the Kerala police. Though the police departments of the neighbouring states have entered into an understanding with the state police for better coordination in crime investigation, a section of the officials has misused the network for their personal gains," sources said.
Highly placed police sources said the department would look into the complaint filed by the accused, K Shaji, against DIG Sreejith, whose name has figured in a series of allegations including his shady realestate deals.
"The incident has prompted the department to seriously look into the allegations involving certain officers," the sources added.
DIG Sreejith had been in the news for his alleged involvement in a property-related case filed before the Kerala High Court by a person named P V Viju.
The complainant, who had moved the court seeking a CBI inquiry against Sreejith, alleged that the latter had reportedly prepared a false power of attorney to claim rights over a property measuring 12 cents and a house at Vennala near Palarivattom.
