KOCHI: Alan Posselt chose rag Yaman to unveil the seducing effects of Hindustani music. “As time is the merger of day and  night, I would like to follow the traditional time-bound rag from the vast world of Hindustani music,” Alan said.

With this brief introduction on Yaman, the Australian sitarist rendered the aalaap in ‘vilambith kal’ to delineate the elating mood of Yaman and  proved his mastery of the sitar strings. When Alan switched over to  ‘Madhyalay’, the listeners could enjoy the exhilarating beauty of the prolonged gamakas.

While playing gamakas in a flawless style Alan showcased the influence of his rigorous training in vocal under great gurus like Ustad Allaudin Khan.

After concluding the traditional aalaap in ‘dhrutha kal’, the maestro presented a beautiful ghayal accompanied by Sidharth Roy Chatterji on the tabla, which was  a perfect blend of rhythmic waves.

Alan went into the myriad moods of Yaman by perfecting the ‘gamakas’.

In tune with the beats of the tabla, Alan explored the untapped beauty of the rag through his matchless ‘manodharma’.

As this Australian sitarist has been trained under teachers from different gharanas the listeners got to enjoy traces of the traditional dhrupad ghayal.

After a detailed narration of the attractive elements of Yaman, Alan entered the second half of his concert for which he selected Khamaj, another sensitive rag from Hindustani.

Interestingly, Alan started the aalaap in Khamaj by following the rhythmic pattern of ‘thrikal’. This unique playing style provided ample space for Sidharth to prove his supremacy on the tabla. The tonal matching of the beats from the tabla and musical waves from the sitar were so perfect that the listeners could experience the beautiful merger of the rhythm and laya at the

concert.

Moreover, the acoustic perfection of the venue, Siva Poorna Auditorium, offered a memorable experience for music buffs.
