KOCHI: Cargo movement in and out of the Cochin Port was partially affected by the strike launched by the workers of container lorries from Monday midnight. However, the loading and unloading of cargo at the container terminal was not affected on Tuesday.

The strike was launched by the coordination committee of trade unions. The committee leaders said they had the support of ten unions. The striking workers took out a protest march at Willingdon Island.

Meanwhile, the Cochin Container Carrier Owners Association, in a press release, said the strike could not be justified. They said the strike was launched without having served a notice.

The lorry owners said they had agreed to increase the existing bata by 20 percent. The labourers demanded an increase of 3540 percent, despite the higher operational costs," Association secretary P Ramachandran said. The Cochin Port authorities said they would not intervene in the issue since the strike was launched by workers from outside the port.
