KOCHI: "Corruption hits everybody but it hits the poor the hardest. It's time we did something to check the menace," Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court J Chelameswar has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Vigilance Awareness Week organised by the Vigilance and AntiCorruption Bureau (VACB) here on Tuesday.

"There is a complete lack of civil morality in the country. Corruption has become a big social problem," the Chief Justice said.

Ninety percent of us would condone corruption if the corrupt is somebody who is associated with us. Unless society starts handling the issue, corruption would not end, he said, and added that unless everyone follows the Gandhian idea of simple living and high thinking, corruption would not diminish in society.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said corruption is a social disaster. It's a crime. It's an activity that will affect the development of our nation. However, people are not willing to report corruption. Hence the awareness week is being observed to create awareness among the young so that they will respond against corruption.

Kodiyeri added that today many instruments are available to expose instances of corruption. He also stressed the need for one more Vigilance court in the state.

Dominic Presentation MLA said the fight against corruption in society must be led not only by the Vigilance but also by the public. AdvocateGeneral C P Sudhakara Prasad, Dominic Presentation MLA, VACB director K P Somarajan and Laxmi Chelameswar attended the function.
