KOCHI: With the demolition of the North rail over-bridge, parking will be a big issue in the city not to mention traffic congestion. Though the police have submitted a proposal suggesting alternative routes, it seems that the police have not looked into the issue of parking.

Rail passengers who have to board and alight at Ernakulam Town Railway Station, would have to walk nearly a kilometre to get to their vehicles.

As per the present plan vehicles coming from Kaloor side to North railway station should take a diversion to Manappatty Parambu Road and then to SRM road to reach the eastern entry of the railway station. But the proposal made by the police does not mention anything about where the vehicles will be parked.

The police said vehicles carrying passengers to the railway station should drop them at the station and park at Manapatty Parambu. “The police will take steps to provide parking space in Manapatty Parambu,” said traffic assistant commissioner Baby John. Vehicles diverted through Pachalam are also expected to ply on SRM Road. Whether the narrow road can accommodate the heavy traffic is the big question.

If the road is packed with vehicles, passengers will have to go to the station on foot.

The Corporation is passing the buck to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation which is carrying out the demolition of the bridge and its reconstruction. “The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is taking care of everything. The Corporation has not identified any place for parking,” said K J Sohan, Town Planning Standing Committee chairman.
