Students of Marine College of Technology, parents stage protests

About a thousand students of Marine College of Technology and their parents staged  a protest before the District Collectorate and the Central Station here on Thursday.

The college was closed down more than a month ago after it was found that it did not have the requisite approval from the Director-General of Shipping.

In spite of an agreement to return the fees to the inducted students by November 15, the authorities have failed to do so, which led to the protest.

The authorities had agreed to pay 80 per cent of the fees back and provide the course completion certificates to 488 students who  paid amounts between `1.5 lakh to `4 lakh. The District Collector has ordered the arrest of the accused and to assess their property so that a due compensation could be provided to the aggrieved students. The Collector asked the parents to approach the court regarding the issue.
