Guiding light to hapless eves

The district panchayat will set up counselling centres for offering guidance to women in distress.

As part of the Nirbhaya project, the district panchayat will set up counselling centres in various panchayats for offering guidance to hapless women and children and combating atrocities against girls and women. The district panchayat has already envisaged a Nirbhaya Centre in Edakkattuvayal panchayat.

As atrocities against women are on the rise in different forms, timely counselling is the need of the hour. Initially counselling samithis will be formed in all panchayats and a few centres will be set up in select panchayats.

With this girls and women in remote areas will also get access to a lending hand and support.

The district panchayat is planning to set up the centre near or above the anganwadi buildings.

“The counselling project is a part of Nirbhaya  programme to offer guidance to girls and women. Counselling samithis will be set up in all the panchayats and around 10 to 15 counselling centres will be set up to support teenagers and women. A panel of trainers will be appointed for the purpose. We have set aside `50 lakh for the project,” said Eldhose Kunnappillil, district panchayat president.

As part of the women’s welfare scheme, counselling centres will be set up soon. The centres will help address the issues faced by women and children. We have submitted a proposal and awaiting sanction, said Valsa Kochukunju, Welfare Standing Committee chairperson.

The majority of women and girls are reluctant to share or speak about the harassment and abused faced. The counselling centres will be a platform where the women and girls can share their experiences and be guided to overcome the trauma.
