Abortion is murder, church reiterates

Reiterating its stand on abortion, the  Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) said that foeticide was equal to murder.

The KCBC said that some vested interests were trying to malign the Catholic Church in the wake of the death of Dr Savita Halappanavar who died in an Irish hospital after doctors reportedly declined to abort her foetus.

The rules in Ireland, a Catholic country, prevented the doctors from performing abortion.

The Bishops Council said that the incident was used for campaigning against the Catholic Church.

It is unfortunate that some vested interests are using the opportunity to create misunderstanding on the Catholic Church by linking this incident with foeticide. Life in any form deserves protection.

Therefore a foetus should also be protected. The Church believes that foeticide is nothing but murder, KCBC deputy secretary general Fr Stephen Alathara observed in a press release.
