Promote Malayalam, says John Paul

Promoting the mother tongue is the fulcrum of our efforts to sustain the culture that is fast seeping away, scriptwriter John Paul has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Varoo Malayalathodoppam’ programme held in connection with the Malayalam language year celebrations held at the Collectorate here on Thursday.

“Malayalam language which has flourished through ‘give and take’ from other Indian languages is now being presented in an SMS format by the new generation. They are doing so because of their inability to understand the greatness of the language,” he said.

He said that the role of missionaries and their contributions to our language are also invaluable.

“The foreigners who had visited our place have influenced and assimilated our language. But following the British rule, our people favour English. Still, the best language for us to communicate is our own mother tongue,  Malayalam,” the veteran scriptwriter added. District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth presided over the function.
