Former Kerala Varma captain cherishes triumph at Goal 2013

Sree Kerala Varma College’s exceptional win at Goal 2013, an initiative of The New Indian Express, was a moment of celebration for Express staffer Varghese A T (Scheduling Dept).

An alumnus of the college, belonging to the 1976-79 batch, Varghese had played a crucial role as the captain of the team to spearhead the college team to create a mark in the field of football. He dedicated his heart and soul to the game till the early 80s. 

Amidst his exhilaration, Varghese explains that the team’s victory should be credited to the present coach Narayana Menon who is also the national-level under-22 assistant coach. “He (coach) has an exceptional talent and knows the players well. Menon had a crucial role in moulding the team,” Varghese said. He  observed that the effort put forward by coaches played an important role in making players.

“M C Radhakrishnan, our physical education trainer, had stood by us then and made our team one of the best,” he said while lauding the dedication and discipline of the players.  To a query on his special moment during the tournament at Sacred Heart College Ground, Thevara, he said, “I felt quite happy when player Appukuttan switched his position as per my advice. After that, he performed much better and it felt like my moment,” A T Varghese  added.
