Special squad to nail erring auto drivers

Erring autorickshaw drivers beware! A special squad in the  women’s cell has been formed to keep a tab on autorickshaw drivers who are disrespectful to women passengers.

Women’s Cell circle-inspector N Philomina told ‘City Express’ that a special squad, comprising four women police personnel, has been formed for the purpose.

“The women’s cell will be vigilant and autorickshaw drivers will be under our watch so as to ensure the safe journey for women. The squad will conduct patrolling at various autorickshaw stands in the city. Various steps, including cancellation of licence and huge fine, will be taken against those drivers who are found guily,” she said.

The decision was taken in the wake of the rise in the number of complaints from women against autorickshaw drivers in the city.

“As many as 68 complaints were received during the last year. Though we have taken action against many, we still haven’t controlled it fully. Complaints in this regard still pour in from different parts of the city,” she added.  Philomina said many autorickshaw drivers behave rashly to women passengers seeking extra charge.

Meanwhile, many women say that the behaviour of many autorickshaw driver were very rude.

“Auto drivers demand extra fare from women as many women don’t show the  nerve to question. In many cases, when women react, what ensue will be a   quarrel. Auto-rickshaw drivers take advantage of the women,” said Arathy, a resident of Kakkanad.
