The district administration has decided to take strict action against illegal functioning of orphanages.

District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth said notices would be issued to those institutions that do not obtain the permission to operate within a month. He was speaking after an assessment meeting  with the Orphanage Control Board held at the District Collectorate on Tuesday.

The Collector asked the orphanages to restrict number of their inmates.

To settle issues pertaining to the working of orphanages, Pareeth gave permission to formulate sub-committees in panchayats and municipalities under the Orphanage Control Board.

The sub-committees will be chaired by the welfare committee chairmen. ICDS officers and Police revenue officials will be part of the committees. Pareeth said steps would be taken against the mounting complaints that many orphanages were not getting nine LPG cylinders.  Action will also be taken on the complaint that many institutions were not even receiving government grants. There are 256 institutions but only 100 institutions are receiving the grant.

Pareeth said after much investigation and also with the permission of Central Control Board, the APL categories will be shifted to BPL. Though more than one institution could function with one registration, it requires the permission of the Social Welfare Board.
