Ro-Ro ferry service hits 1-lakh mark

The ro-ro (roll-on/roll-of) ferry service that facilitates transport of container trucks between Willingdon Island and the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) via waterways has covered one lakh TEUs last Wednesday.

“Both the ro-ro service and ICTT commenced operations at the same time. The ro-ro barge facilitates the container truck to drive in so that the need for a crane to transfer container into the barge does not arise, making it cost-effective and time-saving. It is estimated that when one truck is taken to ICTT on water instead of road, about 11 litres of diesel is saved and it also reduces  pollution,” said Cochin Port Trust Traffic Manager C Unnikrishnan.
