Minister flags off Olympic Day Run

Hundreds of students from various schools in the city took part at the Olympic Day Run here on Sunday.

The Olympic Day Run is a global programme of International Olympic Committee (IOC) promoting mass participation of sports.

The IOC was formally established on June 23, 1894, through the efforts of Pierre de Coubertin promoting competitive sport as a revival of the ancient Olympic Games. Excise Minister K Babu flagged off the run at the Maharaja’s College stadium at 2.30 pm.

He said the observance of the day should be an encouragement for students and athletes prior to the 35th National Games that will be held in Kerala next year. Javelin champions and archery students from various schools and colleges in the city also participated.

An Olympic Day pledge was also taken.

The event, which was organised by the Kerala Olympic Association and the Ernakulam District Association, got a touch of glam with actor and archery champion Ananya participating in the event. Olympian Mercy Kuttan was also present.

The run concluded at the helipad here at 3.30 pm.

MLAs Hibi Eden, Dominic Presentation and Benny Behanan, Kerala Olympic Association president M M Abdul Rahiman, organising committee chairman T J Vinod, general convener Joshi Pallon, coordinator R Ramanadhan, Charles Dias MP and Ernakulam District Sports Council President V K Zakheer Hussain also took part at the event.
