A woman drowned in a river near Arakkakadavu, Eroor, on Monday. The deceased was identified as Premalatha, 46, wife of Gokul, Kadavil House, Edappally South.

According to the police, the incident occurred in the morning when Premalatha went to the river for cleaning plates. She and her husband were living in a house under the Arakkakadavu bridge. She slipped from the steps on the banks and drowned. The police officials said the river was in spate and she did not know swimming.

Though her husband attempted to save her, the effort turned futile. Soon the police and the Fire and Rescue Service personnel reached the spot and carried out rescue operations. The body could be located after an hour of search operation. The body was later shifted to Ernakulam General Hospital where the postmortem was conducted.
