Motocyclist run over by tanker lorry

One motorcyclist died and another was seriously injured after being hit by a tanker lorry at TVS Junction in Kalamassery on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Santhosh, 38, Karekutherayil House, Pazhangadi, Kannur, while Jayraj, 40, Kizhakemadam, Kothamangalam, suffered injuries. Both were business partners with office in Kalamassery.

According to police, the accident occurred by noon when the men proceeding towards Aluva on a motorcycle were hit by a tanker lorry from behind. Both were thrown off the vehicle and  run over by the lorry. Santhosh died on the spot while Jayaraj was rushed to a private hospital nearby.

The authorities in the hospital said that the condition of Jayaraj is still critical. The lorry driver and another employee fled the scene soon after the mishap.

The police have seized the tanker lorry and a case has been registered. Police said that they are on the lookout for the driver who would be arrested soon. The locals said that accidents are frequent in TVS Junction as some drivers without looking at the signal rush to cross the junction.

“Road accidents are very frequent in this area. The police must install cameras here to spot the erring vehicle and drivers,” Rafeeq, a resident, said.
