CBI checks locker of ED Deputy Director

The CBI on Thursday checked the locker and bank transaction details of Chandini, deputy director, Enforcement Directorate (ED), Kozhikode. The CBI had last week registered a case against Chandini and another officer, Parameshwaran, for accepting Rs 24 lakh as kickback for suspending investigations ordered into several hawala cases registered in the northern districts of the state.

CBI officials had been checking the materials in the locker of Chandini and bank transaction details. The search at her residence and office will continue, the officials said. The CBI also found gold jewellery from the office of Chandini. However, during the interrogation she said the jewellery belongs to her daughter.

The CBI will soon summon both the officers to its Kochi office for further interrogation. The case was registered after the IB alerted the Home Ministry that several hawala cases reported in northern district of Kerala were not properly investigated by the ED.

The CBI in its inquiry came to know that these officers received bribes from hawala agents for not carrying out investigations into the cases handed over to them by the local police.
