NIA court security beefed up

The security of the District Court Complex which includes, NIA and CBI courts, have been beefed up following an alert issued by the Intelligence Wing. The Kochi City police has deployed an additional 10 police personal, including armed policemen, to stand vigil at the complex.

The Intelligence officials had alerted cops in the city of an accused in the Kashmir recruitment case, on bail, who was found roaming at the court complex during daytime. The court rooms and surroundings are a beehive of activities during daytime especially in the morning. The police and armed policemen escorting the accused persons from jail cannot monitor those present at the court complex. Considering this a special team is required to monitor the outsiders.

Two armed police guards have been deployed at the entrance gate of the NIA court which is functioning on the first floor of the District Court complex (former NUALS campus) at Kaloor, police officials said." The security arrangements will be round-the-clock on the premises and the duty will be on a shift basis with each shift comprising five policemen from Tripunithura AR Camp,” an official from Tripunithura AR camp said. According to intelligence reports, the security on the court premises needs to be tightened as the number of the terrorism-related cases are on the rise.

At present the  trial of the Kashmir recruitment case is being conducted at the NIA Court.

The Intelligence Wing has noted the presence of unidentified persons after the trial of sensational palm-chopping case commenced.

The Court has adjourned the trial of the case to May 6. According to the police there are 29 accused in the palm-chopping case. If all of them are brought to the Court, it will be crowded. When more policemen are deployed,  everyone, including the culprits, could be brought under watch, sources said.

The court requires a high security system as the trial of Kalamassery bus burning case, Vagamon and Panayikulam SIMI camp cases and Taliparamba Fake Indian Currency Notes case will commence soon. Charge-sheets of these cases have been filed. The Nedumbassery and Karipur fake currency notes cases are also pending before the NIA court.

The CBI Special Court-1 is also functioning on the first floor of the Court while the Family Court is on the ground floor.

Meanwhile, the notification regarding establishing one more NIA Court has been issued by the government. The High Court had given sanction for handing over the charge of NIA Court to the CBI Special Court-1.
