Coir exports reach an all-time high

The exports of coir and coir products from India registered an all-time high of Rs 1,116 crore in 2012-13.

“There has been an increase of Rs 63.4 crore from the previous year,” said Coir Board chairman G Balachandran. In the previous year, the total exports of coir and coir products from the country was Rs 1,052.6 crore. Of the total, exports from the state was to the tune of 71,284 million tonnes (MTs), valued at Rs 636.84 crore.

The state’s contribution to total exports from the country comes to 16.6 percentage in quantity and 57 percentage in value. According to the Coir Board, total exports from Tamil Nadu in 2012-13 was 3,53,533.78 MTs valued at Rs 474.92 crore. This comes to 41.7 percentage in value and 82.3 percentage in quantity of exports.  The contributions from other states put together was `14.27 crore-worth products.
