The state committee election of the Kerala State Rifle Association that was conducted on Wednesday at the Rajeev Gandhi Indoor Stadium witnessed unruly scenes when a section of members boycotted the election process alleging irregularities. M M Abdul Rahman, executive member of the outgoing committee and  president of the  Kerala Olympic Association who led the boycott said that basic democratic norms were violated by the office bearers.

“According to the rules of the Kerala Sports Council, each district can sent two representatives to the state committee election. But the present office bearers have introduced proportionate voting. This gives certain districts undue advantage. In today’s election, representatives from Thrissur district were not permitted to cast their vote,” he said.

He also said that the explanation given by the office bearers was that they did not had a consent letter from the District Collector. But many other voters from other districts have voted without the letter from their respective District Collectors.

“The office bearers were thwarting the democratic process to hush up certain financial irregularities,”he said. He added that the undemocratic attitude exhibited by the office bearers made eight people to boycott the election procedure. However, the official faction conducted election and a new committee was elected.

An office bearer of the newly elected committee said that the allegations raised by certain members are totally baseless.

“It was decided in a general body meeting of the Association on June 20, 2011,  to introduce  proportionate meeting. The members who are creating issues now also were present when the bylaw was amended”.

He also added that there were disputes in Thrissur district and therefore the Collector had not given official letter to the representatives.

The rebel faction has decided to take the present issue to court.
