Sreesanth fan climbs tower, threatens suicide

A drunkard created some anxious moments for the public here on Saturday evening when he climbed atop an electric tower and threatened to commit suicide if pacer Sreesanth, who has been arrested for alleged spot-fixing, is not released.

However, the timely intervention of Fire and Rescue Service units from Mattanchery and Gandhinagar helped in preventing the tragedy.

According to the police, Jobin, 35, Kollamparambil Veedu, Perumbadavam, hit the bottle at a bar at Kumbalangi Road and after some heated arguments on the recent IPL spot-fixing scam, climbed the electric tower of the bar.

As the public gathered near the tower, he climbed further. The KSEB soon switched off the power supply to the tower.

By the time the Fire and Rescue Service unit from Mattanchery arrived, Jobin had already climbed the tower halfway.

Soon the Gandhinagar unit too arrived with rescue equipment.  After spreading a net, four firemen from both units started climbing the tower. Although Jobin had climbed to the top and even touched the electric line, but with the power supply being cut off, the rescue personnel were able to reach him.

They were able to change his mind and soon brought him down safely, thereby ending the nearly three-hour-long drama.

Later Jobin was handed over to the Palluruthy Police, who took him into custody.
